Answers to common questions about our patented glazing system
How difficult is it to remove Nu-Glaze® once fitted and cured?
+It is extremely difficult to remove without breaking the glass, which serves as an excellent security feature of the Nu-Glaze® system. This assumes the profile has been installed with the correct amount and placement of silicone.
Can I use Nu-Glaze® on F4B steel section (section with a recess) windows?
+Yes! Ensure the surface is flat and perpendicular to the glass. For frames with recess areas, use a hard, plastic filler piece to create a level "foundation" in every corner and in between, spaced about 300 - 500mm apart, as our Spacer Set which is short 30 - 40mm x 3 - 4mm thick x 7 - 8mm wide ABS or retain existing putty in recess areas if the putty is not loose or crumbling. The rebate should offer a 90-degree, clean, intact surface for proper silicone seating and curing.
Do I need to remove all existing putty?
+Not necessarily, only when the Full Install is used. If Frontall Install was chosen, only the triangular, normally outer/exterior glazing material needs to be removed. "Silicone" the triangular snapped off section of Nu-Glaze® into position were the putty or previous glazing material was.
See install methods here.
Can I use any miter apparatus?
+Yes! Although the patent cutter, MSX-1, works fast, accurate, neat and leaves no burrs, thus not needing any post cut action.
What if the corners don’t meet perfectly?
+While the silicone is still wet, rotate one or both profiles until the 45° faces align 100%.
What if my frame toe height is only 10mm high?
+There's a score line provided to snap off on the S7 profile, accommodating different frame sizes. On the S4 and W4 profiles this is not necessary.
Can I use any type of silicone or adhesive?
+We recommend neutral cure silicone, specifically tested for best results. It has low odor, quick curing, strong bonding features, and high UV resistance. Other adhesives may contain chemicals harmful to the frame, and we cannot guarantee their performance.
How strong is silicone for long-term use?
+Absolutely strong enough! A 25-year test in the Arizona desert showed neutral cure silicone as the only adhesive that doesn't lose its original strength. Our European-made, low modulus, construction grade silicone conforms to ASTM C920 Type S, Grade NS, Class 25, Use T, NT, A and G. Full TDS is available on request.
Are there additional uses for Nu-Glaze®?
+Yes! The outer section works perfectly as a "quarter flat" for kitchens/bathrooms e.g. between tiles and counter. The hollow section can route thin wires and it can secure any panel material into frames or flat surfaces. It can be used for waterproofing, sealing gaps, ensuring easy to clean surfaces.
What if the glass is thicker than 6.38mm, i.e. double glazing unit?
+This method is called the 'deconstructed' Full Installation since the snapped off L-shaped backlip can be secured with a thin continuous bead of wet Neutral cure silicone onto the frame, whereafter the glass or SIGU unit is secured onto L-shaped backlip, also with a continuous bead of wet silicone, and lastly, the snapped off frontal triangular section is secured onto the glass the same way, with the same silicone.
Afterwards, any small/hairline openings are sealed with the colour matching siliconized acrylic as per usual finish.
This method also allows one to re-use old glass that came out during old glazing removal and the Full Installation method cannot be used due to insufficient spacing. Especially when trimming the original glass is not possible or advisable, i.e. heritage glass.
This method applies for all 3 profiles, namely W4, S4 and the S7 profile.
How 'green' is Nu-Glaze?
+Nu-Glaze uPVC is made up of 57% salt and 43% ethylene, which gives it the much sought after technical properties. Ethylene is just one step refined from natural earth gas, meaning it's made with far less energy than any other plastic used in common use today. This is why PVC is considered the 'greenest' plastic around.
1 kg of PVC has a smaller CO2 impact than 1 kg of aluminium or even a kg of cheese.
The virgin grade uPVC used for Nu-Glaze can be recycled up to 7 times, the most times for any thermoplastics today.
Nu-Glaze on windows and doors are therefore not only very durable and low maintenance, but logic dictates that it is also highly eco friendly, if one takes the ultra long life and re-usability after glass breaks, into consideration.
Last, but not least, the salvation of old steel and wood windows (that would have gone to landfills) is probably the biggest ecological friendly contribution of all the mentioned factors.
How do I measure for sufficient material?
+For rectangular/square windows: 2 x (height + width), add 20mm per length for miter cutting. For any other shape windows, measure the perimeter/circumference. Round up rather than down. Nu-Glaze® comes in 2.4m lengths.
Can I order custom lengths?
+Yes, custom lengths are available provided minimum order quantities are fulfilled.
Where and how can I buy Nu-Glaze®?
+Currently available through our website with direct delivery. We are still negotiating with DIY retailers for broader availability.
What if the glass breaks?
+One of the advantages of Nu-Glaze® is that the profiles can be removed, cleaned and reused when glass needs to be replaced. Follow the steps below to remove the broken glass and prepare the existing profiles for reuse.
Step 1: Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) before starting work.
Step 2: Carefully remove all remaining broken glass shards.
Step 3: Cut the silicone bond between the frame and profile.
Step 4: Scrape the old silicone out from the groove, rub the old silicone off the outside and prepare the previous Nu-Glaze profiles for reuse.
To remove the beading, start at the top horizontal, then vertical sides, and lastly the bottom horizontal, thus reverse order versus installation order.
Done slowly, the beading can be removed intact, cleaned and reused with new glass. This provides added security and saves cost compared to traditional putty.
This process can only be done if the glass was broken. If the Frontal Install was used, cut the profiles away, one by one, as described above.
Can I paint Nu-Glaze®?
+Yes! Lightly key the surface (200 grit sandpaper or dishwashing scouring pad), then paint with any paint of your choice. Best results achieved with high quality water based exterior PVA acrylic. Test a small, inconspicuous area for solvent paint reaction.
What if the outer surface gets damaged?
+The exterior wall requires significant force to break. Even if damaged, the inner structure and silicone will hold the glass. Plastic welding can successfully repair any damage. If needed, the damaged section can be replaced by a new piece, in the Frontal Install method.
